      He worked as a construction worker at the historic Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado from 1933 to 1942.

      He enlisted in the U.S. Army on January 22, 1941, during World War II, and served in the European Theater, where he was wounded in combat. He was discharged on October 6, 1945, and was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star for his service.
